SEI and CMM - Frustrated by major Program failures, the founders of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) created the Capability Maturity Model standards a decade ago. These standards form the basis for assessing the management and delivery execution capabilities of any Information Technology organization. According to SEI reports, the majority of US IT organizations fall into either CMM-1 or CMM-2 levels. In fact, they state that fewer than 10 organizations have been rated at CMM-4 nationwide.
Obviously, these are stringent standards, intended to demand excellence in oversight, communication, and execution. Adopting and then performing at the upper levels does not guarantee success, but does provide the framework for success. B. D.
