Dealing with change has become the norm. Debates over methods and procedures continue within most organizations. Just as one set of skills becomes a competency within an organization, the underlying assumptions change.
In an effort at risk mitigation, various sectors of the Information Technology industry have developed Standards. As these Standards become widely adopted and are proven, debates ensue over adoption rates, competency levels, and execution. Standards bodies that can be addressed include:
- the International Standards Organization (ISO),
- the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and their Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and the latest variant CMM Interactive (CMM-I),
- the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) with their Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL),
- and the Information Technology Governance Institute (ITGI) which has published Control Objectives for Information and related Technologies (COBIT) linked to the US Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). Following the mandates of the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) they provide the standards for conducting audit activities under The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
